As I understand, it was Arthur von Weisenberger that brought in Laura Schlessinger and Robert Eringer. More of a curse to Wendy then she is aware. Schlessinger was established as the rot at the bottom of the barrel, and now Eringer comes into focus as another scoundrel. At least, he is documented in court papers. His self-promotion is author and director of an intelligence service... Wikipedia said: "Some believe that either the Central Intelligence Agency or Mossad conceived the name 'Robert Eringer'..." possibly that is an Eringer plant to create intrigue?

“I guess I think, when you look at the good sources of information, were we to open up the California coast or the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, it would be 12, 15, maybe 20 years before those resources came online, if not to full production,’’ he said. “That’s not going to impact the price of gasoline anytime soon.’’

Kevin Doleman and Sue Daemon, a couple of former Lowe fans, were strolling through the Financial District the other day when they spotted the “Brothers & Sisters” pol on Franklin Street.

“Sue said to me, ‘I think that’s Rob Lowe,’ ” Doleman, a 27-year-old telephone company worker told the Track. “I thought she was kidding, but sure enough, there he was walking down the street, smoking a cigar.”

Doleman said he and Daemon, 33, a Rebecca’s Cafe manager, followed Lowe as he made his way towards the Langham Hotel. As Lowe passed the front door, a guy got out of a cab and almost ran into him.

“The guy was like, ‘Hey, you’re Rob Lowe!’ and they started going back and forth,” Doleman said, with the fan kidding Lowe about “Youngblood,” a hockey movie the then-Brat Packer made in 1986.“That led to a discussion of the Celtics and as soon as they started talking about it, the conversation got kind of loud,” Doleman said.

Well, that would be because Lowe is a die-hard Lakers fan who goes to every Kobe & Co. home game! (But he did have his photo snapped with captain Paul Pierce [stats] at Game 5 at the Garden the other night.)

“Finally, the guy said to Lowe, ‘Why don’t you take your cigar elsewhere? Your opinions stink like your cigar,’ ” Doleman recalled.

To which, Lowe replied “You know what stinks? Your Celtics stink,” Doleman said. “They stink like the cigar.”

At which point, Doleman said, Lowe kind of lifted his leg, put the cigar behind his butt and let a loud, booming one rip.

“Then he said, ‘No, NOW they stink like the cigar!’ ”

Classy, no?

Doleman admits that he burst out laughing, but poor Sue, who, until that point had been quite starstruck, was crushed.

“Can you believe that? Right in public,” Sue said. “He’s still quite attractive but as a Celtics fan I was offended. I guess I was in the wrong spot at the wrong time.”

KARACHI - British troops have once again recaptured the less than a few square kilometers of the district headquarters of Musa Qala town in Helmand province from the Taliban, but, as before, it could turn out to be a pyrrhic victory.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Kabul have heralded this week's operations as a "most strategic and significant success" in the province, where 80% of Afghanistan's poppy cultivation is located.

British troops have seized Musa Qala before, but then have become virtual prisoners in their barracks. Indeed, last year they were only able to vacate the town after striking a truce with the Taliban, who controlled all the surrounding areas of the inhospitable terrain.

The Taliban put up token resistance this week, according to a Taliban commander in Kandahar, Moulvi Abdul Jalil, who told Asia Times Online on telephone that the organisation now aims to concentrate its efforts on Kandahar province and has already captured two districts near Kandahar city.

With regard to Musa Qala, Mullah Noormal (a jihadi alias), a lieutenant of Mullah Abdul Bari, said in a satellite phone interview with Asia Times Online, "They [British] fired continuous artillery shells for two days on the civilian population and as a result the people evacuated the area. The Taliban did not receive any casualties as we did not actually fight. Civilians were the one victims. We were under the command of Mullah Abdul Bari and retreated when the troops rolled into town.
"Now that the troops are in Musa Qala, we have taken over positions nearby, namely the towns of Raigi and Shaban. The British troops are now once again trapped, like they were in 2006. We will now retaliate at a time of our choice. They don't have even offices to stay in in Musa Qala as we destroyed the Olaswali [administrative office] before leaving the town," said Noormal.

"Now they are in Musa Qala's headquarters and we are sitting in all the villages around Musa Qala. They don't have a way forward or backwards.''

Noormal's comments could be taken with a pinch of salt,
but they are not entirely untrue.

This correspondent spent considerable time traveling in all the districts of Helmand province under the control of the Taliban (and also those under British control. He saw the area extensively through the eyes of the Taliban late last year and through the eyes of NATO forces early this year.

Beyond Greskh district, on the way to Musa Qala, there is no road network. Vehicles have to travel on wide deserted plains, following the tire marks of other vehicles. The average speed is less than 10 kilometers an hour. The approach to Musa Qala is marked by agriculture fields and tress. The town itself comprises some shops, a hospital, a few mosques and inns and the district headquarters.

NATO's obsession with Helmand
It is clear that NATO is obsessed with Helmand province in order to complete the renovation of Kajaki Dam, a hydroelectric project that will ensure uninterrupted power supply to Kandahar and Helmand provinces. This is strategically significant for a backward region where roads do not exist and the people still rely on natural rain water reservoirs.

Helmand shares a lawless border with Pakistan through which smugglers carry goods to Iran via Pakistan's Balochistan province. Kandahar province lies to its east. The bumper poppy crops in Helmand that make their way through Pakistan and Iran to Europe earn the Taliban huge dividends to fuel their war against NATO. And the smuggling routes are reliable supply lines for arms and human resources to flow into Afghanistan.

From the province's southern district of Gramsir, bordering Pakistan, to the northern end of Baghran, large areas are partially or completely under Taliban control. Partial control means that district headquarters are under the control of the Kabul administration and all surrounding villages are under the control of the Taliban.

British authorities in Helmand confirm that poppy cultivation takes place across the province. Drug-processing labs are mostly in Taliban-controlled Sangin district, north of Gramsir. The trafficking routes pass through the government-controlled provincial capital of Lashkargah, between those two districts, with the connivance of Afghan security before going on through Taliban areas to Pakistan. Using exactly the same route via Pakistan, arms are smuggled into Helmand then spread all over Afghanistan.

In this context, NATO is once again desperate to cut off these vital arteries.

The scope of success

US-led forces entered Helmand province without much resistance during the invasion of 2001 because it was a collective tribal decision to say goodbye to the Taliban and welcome the new power. It was believed the incoming forces would be able to provide basic necessities such as water, electricity, food and ultimately prosperity.

This did not happen, while efforts were made to curtail poppy cultivation, a vital cash crop. By 2005, the tribes - once again unanimously - decided that it was time to boot out the foreign forces (rather than welcome the Taliban again) so they could grow their poppy and lead their lives according to their own traditions and tribal codes without the intervention of the non-local Afghan army and police.

They did allow the Taliban to operate, and foreign forces were driven away from many areas. However, apart from Baghran district, which is completely ruled by the Taliban, and Lashkargah, which is run by the Afghan government, all districts are run by local tribal councils, which allow the Taliban to stay.

From December 2006 until now, British Commonwealth Office staff and the British task force stationed in Helmand have tried their level best to make Helmand "civilized". They have opened schools, rebuilt mosques, dug wells, launched programs for capacity building and many other development projects in coordination with tribal elders. But this has not delivered the expected results, as the population remains obsessed to drive out the foreigners.

It should be stressed that this does not necessarily mean that people are fully committed to the Taliban and their ways. Except for Baghran, most places are manned by pro-Taliban commanders who don't represent the Taliban hardcore - they are just local tribal warriors who have joined the Taliban rank and file for the time being.

The greatest challenge facing NATO is to retain control of the recaptured region of Musa Qala and win desperately needed indigenous support. This is possible through two means: complete administrative liberty for the people, which means tribal rule, and the financial freedom for them to grow poppy and trade (read smuggle). Once NATO agrees to this, the people will be won over and the Taliban will be sidelined.

It's a tough choice. Meanwhile, the Taliban have captured two districts near Kandahar to build up pressure in that province to distract NATO from Helmand.

Santa Barbara saw this over the last year, with meetings organized by the Santa Barbara County Action Network and Santa Barbara Clergy Association regarding internal changes at this newspaper. Representatives of the News-Press, if they were invited at all, were to sit on panels stacked with people from competing media outfits or who were tied to politicians upset about the newspaper's past editorial criticisms of their misdeeds.

The sponsors promote these events as independent forums for the community to seek solutions or common ground. The reality is that they are lopsided gatherings -- loaded with speakers with one point of view -- meant to lead people toward a particular ideological agenda or attack individuals."

There was hope on the horizon the Santa Barbara News-Press A2 columnist, Laura Schlessinger would stop doing news and Middle East lessons and she would just sell books and bore people to death with her old unlocal shtick. The FBI is still investigating the unprotected News-Press computers 15,000 images, child porn crimes? After 3-4 months there should have been a word from the FBI? Schlessinger wrote on this before and it is a local story. With her cloudy past and situations why not use the column to clear things up? I don't know about discourse at South Coast activist groups, I hear another level of talk. The porn and child porn incidents went away for a while but it is curious not a word from the FBI. Wendy McCaw once had us believe the children were important to her, what happened? Will Wendy get her computers back or is that a done deal? The longer things drag on the more talk, suspicions and questions.

Schlessinger's son, Deryk Schlessinger (also child rape, torture, porn cartoon incident), appears to have worked some back room deals. Not unusual for the rich and they can do no comments and can leave it at untrustworthy suspects. I don't know the people who believe he didn't create the KingOf*Hearts* My Space and that he's not a time bomb. That's not to say he doesn't have a charming side as well. It isn't respectful to the public when the back room deals for the rich come down. It won't bode well for Wendy either. She's placed too many porn and child porn types in her drama. The FBI may get to who did it or it's just going to fall on the person who was responsible for protecting work place computers. Public opinion is what it is.

This week the 64th British soldier to die in Afghanistan, Corporal Mike Gilyeat, was buried. All the right things were said about this brave soldier, just as, on current trends, they will be said about one or more of his colleagues who follow him next week.

The alarming escalation of the casualty rate among British soldiers in Afghanistan – up to ten per cent – led to discussion this week on whether it could be fairly compared to casualty rates in the Second World War.

But the key question is this: what are our servicemen dying for? There are glib answers to that: bringing democracy and development to Afghanistan, supporting the government of President Hamid Karzai in its attempt to establish order in the country, fighting the Taliban and preventing the further spread of radical Islam into Pakistan.

But do these answers stand up to close analysis?

There has been too easy an acceptance of the lazy notion that the war in Afghanistan is the 'good' war, while the war in Iraq is the 'bad' war, the blunder. The origins of this view are not irrational. There was a logic to attacking Afghanistan after 9/11.

Afghanistan was indeed the headquarters of Osama Bin Laden and his organisation, who had been installed and financed there by the CIA to fight the Soviets from 1979 until 1989. By comparison, the attack on Iraq – which was an enemy of Al Qaeda and no threat to us – was plainly irrational in terms of the official justification.

So the attack on Afghanistan has enjoyed a much greater sense of public legitimacy. But the operation to remove Bin Laden was one thing. Six years of occupation are clearly another.

Few seem to turn a hair at the officially expressed view that our occupation of Iraq may last for decades.

Lib Dem leader Menzies Campbell has declared, fatuously, that the Afghan war is 'winnable'.

Afghanistan was not militarily winnable by the British Empire at the height of its supremacy. It was not winnable by Darius or Alexander, by Shah, Tsar or Great Moghul. It could not be subdued by 240,000 Soviet troops. But what, precisely, are we trying to win?

In six years, the occupation has wrought one massive transformation in Afghanistan, a development so huge that it has increased Afghan GDP by 66 per cent and constitutes 40 per cent of the entire economy. That is a startling achievement, by any standards. Yet we are not trumpeting it. Why not?

The answer is this. The achievement is the highest harvests of opium the world has ever seen.

The Taliban had reduced the opium crop to precisely nil. I would not advocate their methods for doing this, which involved lopping bits, often vital bits, off people. The Taliban were a bunch of mad and deeply unpleasant religious fanatics. But one of the things they were vehemently against was opium.
That is an inconvenient truth that our spin has managed to obscure. Nobody has denied the sincerity of the Taliban's crazy religious zeal, and they were as unlikely to sell you heroin as a bottle of Johnnie Walker.

They stamped out the opium trade, and impoverished and drove out the drug warlords whose warring and rapacity had ruined what was left of the country after the Soviet war.

That is about the only good thing you can say about the Taliban; there are plenty of very bad things to say about them. But their suppression of the opium trade and the drug barons is undeniable fact.

Now we are occupying the country, that has changed. According to the United Nations, 2006 was the biggest opium harvest in history, smashing the previous record by 60 per cent. This year will be even bigger.

Our economic achievement in Afghanistan goes well beyond the simple production of raw opium. In fact Afghanistan no longer exports much raw opium at all. It has succeeded in what our international aid efforts urge every developing country to do. Afghanistan has gone into manufacturing and 'value-added' operations.

It now exports not opium, but heroin. Opium is converted into heroin on an industrial scale, not in kitchens but in factories. Millions of gallons of the chemicals needed for this process are shipped into Afghanistan by tanker. The tankers and bulk opium lorries on the way to the factories share the roads, improved by American aid, with Nato troops.

How can this have happened, and on this scale? The answer is simple. The four largest players in the heroin business are all senior members of the Afghan government – the government that our soldiers are fighting and dying to protect.

When we attacked Afghanistan, America bombed from the air while the CIA paid, armed and equipped the dispirited warlord drug barons – especially those grouped in the Northern Alliance – to do the ground occupation. We bombed the Taliban and their allies into submission, while the warlords moved in to claim the spoils. Then we made them ministers.

President Karzai is a good man. He has never had an opponent killed, which may not sound like much but is highly unusual in this region and possibly unique in an Afghan leader. But nobody really believes he is running the country. He asked America to stop its recent bombing campaign in the south because it was leading to an increase in support for the Taliban. The United States simply ignored him. Above all, he has no control at all over the warlords among his ministers and governors, each of whom runs his own kingdom and whose primary concern is self-enrichment through heroin.

My knowledge of all this comes from my time as British Ambassador in neighbouring Uzbekistan from 2002 until 2004. I stood at the Friendship Bridge at Termez in 2003 and watched the Jeeps with blacked-out windows bringing the heroin through from Afghanistan, en route to Europe.

I watched the tankers of chemicals roaring into Afghanistan.

Yet I could not persuade my country to do anything about it. Alexander Litvinenko – the former agent of the KGB, now the FSB, who died in London last November after being poisoned with polonium 210 – had suffered the same frustration over the same topic.

There are a number of theories as to why Litvinenko had to flee Russia. The most popular blames his support for the theory that FSB agents planted bombs in Russian apartment blocks to stir up anti-Chechen feeling.

But the truth is that his discoveries about the heroin trade were what put his life in danger. Litvinenko was working for the KGB in St Petersburg in 2001 and 2002. He became concerned at the vast amounts of heroin coming from Afghanistan, in particular from the fiefdom of the (now) Head of the Afghan armed forces, General Abdul Rashid Dostum, in north and east Afghanistan.

Dostum is an Uzbek, and the heroin passes over the Friendship Bridge from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan, where it is taken over by President Islam Karimov's people. It is then shipped up the railway line, in bales of cotton, to St Petersburg and Riga.

The heroin Jeeps run from General Dostum to President Karimov. The UK, United States and Germany have all invested large sums in donating the most sophisticated detection and screening equipment to the Uzbek customs centre at Termez to stop the heroin coming through.

But the convoys of Jeeps running between Dostum and Karimov are simply waved around the side of the facility.

Litvinenko uncovered the St Petersburg end and was stunned by the involvement of the city authorities, local police and security services at the most senior levels. He reported in detail to President Vladimir Putin. Putin is, of course, from St Petersburg, and the people Litvinenko named were among Putin's closest political allies. That is why Litvinenko, having miscalculated badly, had to flee Russia.
I had as little luck as Litvinenko in trying to get official action against this heroin trade. At the St Petersburg end he found those involved had the top protection. In Afghanistan, General Dostum is vital to Karzai's coalition, and to the West's pretence of a stable, democratic government.

Opium is produced all over Afghanistan, but especially in the north and north-east – Dostum's territory. Again, our Government's spin doctors have tried hard to obscure this fact and make out that the bulk of the heroin is produced in the tiny areas of the south under Taliban control. But these are the most desolate, infertile rocky areas. It is a physical impossibility to produce the bulk of the vast opium harvest there.

That General Dostum is head of the Afghan armed forces and Deputy Minister of Defence is in itself a symbol of the bankruptcy of our policy. Dostum is known for tying opponents to tank tracks and running them over. He crammed prisoners into metal containers in the searing sun, causing scores to die of heat and thirst.

Since we brought 'democracy' to Afghanistan, Dostum ordered an MP who annoyed him to be pinned down while he attacked him. The sad thing is that Dostum is probably not the worst of those comprising the Karzai government, or the biggest drug smuggler among them.

Our Afghan policy is still victim to Tony Blair's simplistic world view and his childish division of all conflicts into 'good guys' and 'bad guys'. The truth is that there are seldom any good guys among those vying for power in a country such as Afghanistan. To characterise the Karzai government as good guys is sheer nonsense.

Why then do we continue to send our soldiers to die in Afghanistan? Our presence in Afghanistan and Iraq is the greatest recruiting sergeant for Islamic militants. As the great diplomat, soldier and adventurer Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Burnes pointed out before his death in the First Afghan War in 1841, there is no point in a military campaign in Afghanistan as every time you beat them, you just swell their numbers. Our only real achievement to date is falling street prices for heroin in London.

Remember this article next time you hear a politician calling for more troops to go into Afghanistan. And when you hear of another brave British life wasted there, remember you can add to the casualty figures all the young lives ruined, made miserable or ended by heroin in the UK.

They, too, are casualties of our Afghan policy.

Somehow they all come together with their large supporting cast at De La Guerra Plaza. Wendy P.'s prime real estate. Also, Craig McCaw and wife 2, Susan Rasinski McCaw, are doing the Santa Barbara real estate market and violating codes. The old school
Santa Barbara ownership class, they are not. The benefactors of old are a shrinking class. Wendy P. is leading a charge that turns the stomachs of fellow libertarians and conservatives. Who's tracking the troops?

The Department of Defense is failing to properly monitor the long-term health of soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines more than 15 years after the outbreak of mysterious Persian Gulf War illnesses.

Following the first Gulf War, the Defense Department began collecting millions of serum specimens from service members returning from deployments, and placing them in large freezers for future study. If thawed, this serum - which was bled from service members teaspoons at a time - would total thousands of gallons.

But to help the service members, someone would have to study these specimens, and that is rarely done. Although it houses the largest inventory of serum specimens in the world, the Defense Department repository employs only one full-time scientist and has never been awarded a permanent budget to test specimens for toxic exposures or other health threats.

The repository also is running out of space - bursting at the seams with more than 42 million specimens. More than 5 million of the repository's oldest specimens - collected before the Gulf War - are now stacked floor to ceiling in teetering cardboard boxes, inaccessible to researchers, while the Defense Department's health leaders slowly discuss how and where to build a new repository facility and who would run it.

The inventory continues to grow at more than 2 million specimens annually. Millions more specimens from the Gulf War era will need to be boxed up later this year.

And while leading civilian repositories now store frozen serum specimens in ultra-cold minus-80-degree Centigrade storage to minimize degradation, the Defense Department continues to store its newest serum specimens in outdated walk-in freezers at a comparatively balmy minus-30 degrees Centigrade, potentially harming the delicate protein and chemical biomarkers that might contain evidence of toxic and infectious exposures.

Urine specimens are another useful tool in monitoring health, as any doctor will attest. Yet the Defense Department discards the 2 million-plus urine specimens it collects every year during routine drug testing.

Monitoring health also requires access to modern medical records systems. Military hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan are forced to use relatively archaic systems that don't communicate in real time with the rest of the electronic medical record. These systems don't even talk among themselves.

Doctors treating patients transported between facilities on the battlefield often can't access electronic records written by surgeons minutes earlier. Frustration has been so intense that doctors treating patients evacuated through Germany have developed a separate Web-based system to work around the problem. Confusion over which system the doctors in the field are supposed to be using continues, compromising the quality of the health data.

One solution, off-the-shelf Web-based technology - such as VPNs (virtual private networks), used commonly by corporations to allow remote access to computer networks - has yet to reach the battlefield. Service members stationed in Afghanistan on remote snowy mountainsides routinely access their personal e-mail on the Web, but medics are not empowered by the Defense Department to use the Web to view and interact with vital medical records stored on systems in the United States.

Instead, medics in the field are instructed to record medical information using outdated handheld computers that often break down or run out of power. More often than not, medics simply don't use them, leaving no trace of medical care and giving the impression of a falsely low rate of disease and illness among deployed troops.

Despite these problems, the Defense Department reassures Congress and the American public that service members have their health comprehensively monitored, including a lengthy reassessment a few months after they return from deployment.

These assessments are little more than poorly worded, multi-page forms of little use to clinicians and epidemiologists in screening for diseases. The reassessments have demonstrated little efficacy in increasing access to military mental or physical health care. They often distract doctors, nurses and other health workers from providing therapeutic patient care.

And now the requirement to complete this lengthy reassessment form is being waived for soldiers sent back into the war zone after serving more than a year there. Tragically, these overworked service members - the ones who need the most careful physical and psychological assessments - are often deploying again after completing a token two-page form containing only a single mental health question. Often, no one confirms both the accuracy of the information and the suitability of the service member for repeated deployment.

Because of this, large numbers of service members on psychoactive medications are still being deployed, including many on anti-psychotic medications and anticonvulsants. As many as one in seven deployed service members has a recent history of psychoactive medication use.

But just which of these deploying service members have potentially serious psychiatric disorders is unclear, because the data systems that monitor pharmacy prescriptions are not linked to the Defense Department's deployment database.

Nor are these linked to the larger medical surveillance database that tracks medical diagnoses. The Defense Department would be hard-pressed to quickly identify the service members deployed this year with a history of treatment for bipolar disorder or psychosis - in direct violation of its new policy.

What isn't monitored can't be measured or reported. Nor can it improve care to service members, or forecast what will be needed to care for the next generation of veterans.

The health data in the Defense Department's databases and the serum repository have shed light on possible causes of multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia and various cancers, and contributed to our understanding of the epidemiology of mental and physical diseases. But so much more could be done.

Sadly, many key military health organizations are led by careerists with little experience in this type of work. There is little incentive, and significant risk, for Defense Department health leaders to point out problems, to explore controversial findings or to contradict military leadership when the health of service members is at stake.

Monitoring the health of service members is a responsibility too important to be left to a military leadership distracted by the exigencies of war. Responsibility for monitoring health should be consolidated under a new Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, under the direction of an independent civilian expert in public health. Service members cannot wait another 15 years.
